According to Christian tradition, the rose window represents Christ’s dominion over Earth. Furthermore, according to some studies, the rose window of the Basilica of Collemaggio presents numerous references to numerology and, more generally, to symbolism. A connection rich in symbolic meanings can be read between the central rose window and the Cosmatesque floor of the Basilica, created between the 14th and 15th centuries, with a geometric design and characterised by alternating white and red stone tiles according to the motif that recalls the compositional apparatus of the facade cladding. In one particular point, there are geometric shapes resembling a labyrinth: according to some scholars, during the summer solstice one can proceed to an alchemical reading of the floor, at the moment in which the light from the central rose window hits a precise point of its emblematic design.
